Is she the next big thing?

Focused, Multi-talented, mellow voiced and hardworking are just some of the adjectives that define this budding artist who is causing ripples in the local music scene. She has perfected the art of pelting positive danceable lyrics that have left music pundits in awe. Welcome to the world of Nanaa, a neo-soul artist.
What drives her? “The plight of the girl child”, that is the answer I get from Nanaa and her song Naliya which she collaborated with Jayne can attest to that. “Music is a universal language and it affords me the opportunity to highlight the problems we undergo as women”, she adds. The songs on her album tackle a wide array of issues that afflict the society. One of the outstanding tracks on the album is hujafa hujaumbika. The theme surrounding the song is the predicament that faces people with special needs. “My album has some love songs as love makes the world go round”, she says with a chuckle.
She has been practicing with her band that constitutes of the veteran guitarist cum producer, Etienne Mangala of Yada studio and Perminus who doubles as a pianist and voice coach. Her debut album kikaragosi will be launched on the 19th August 2011 at Alliance Fraincais. “Its hard work performing with a live band thus the early preparation”, she continues “but I have a team of dedicated back-up singers who will make the launch one of a kind”.
What differentiates Nanaa from her contemporaries is the depth of her lyrics. Her music is a departure from what we are used to. The lyrics are poetic, soothing and one can comfortably listen to with elderly people. The powerfully done songs will be a magnet to corporates and NGO’s. The production is excellent with the acoustics standing out. Her music cuts across all generations. She has collaborated on two of her songs with Perminus and the equally talented Yvonne.
The beautiful Nanah is an alumni of Kinyui High School and Jomo Kenyatta University. She draws her inspiration from Miriam Makeba, Juliana Kanyamozi, Lady Jaydee, Sauti Soul and the late Brenda Fassie.
Nanaa works closely with Junguu Quu, a music writer and produces at YADA records.
