The much touted Okoa Kenya referendum call by CORD is good as dead thanks to quick thinking by Jubilee. CORD is now crying foul accusing the government of using Chiefs and their assistants to thwart efforts of collecting the prerequisite 1 million votes required by the constitution to conduct a referendum.

According to the CORD secretariat, government functionaries are buying the referendum books and those handed over to chiefs are yet to be submitted to the agents who issued them out.

Khalwale was quoted by a section of the media as saying ;

“Chiefs in some selected areas have been detailed to buy the referendum signature books from our members. Much as some books, even from Kakamega county, have not been returned by our officers, those so far surrendered are enough and they have the requisite numbers needed for the referendum,”

“Those misusing chiefs to engage in these matters are wasting their time, because the referendum is still on. Those who think we are softening in the push for the referendum are missing the point.”

The areas most affected are Migori, Bungoma, Kakamega, Rift Valley, parts of Central Kenya and five other counties.

CORD had indicated it would shelve the referendum calls if the two differing parties agreed to dialogue.

Meanwhile Starehe MP rubbished the claims by CORD saying

“These are people with no clear focus, and they can say anything. They have realised they will never get the requisite signatures to call for a referendum”
