Eight dead as matatu rams into motorcycles in Kisii

Eight people died Saturday afternoon when a matatu heading from Kiamokama rammed into several motorcycles at Kisii School along Kisii-Keroka road. The dead include passengers in the matatu and boda boda operators.

Kisii Level-six hospital medical superintendent Dr Enock Ondari said that six of the victims died on the spot while two others died on arrival at the hospital.

“Bodies of six people were ferried to the mortuary while two other victims succumbed on arrival,” Ondari said.

Ondari said that 16 survivors of the accident are getting treatment for various injuries.

“Those admitted will undergo CT scans and X-rays to determine the extent of injuries suffered before treatments,” Ondari added.

The matatu belonging to Ammotak Co.Lt allegedly hit three vehicles a few meters way before the accident.

Area OCP Tom Mutisya who arrived at the scene said that they would not immediately establish the cause of the accident but suspected it was because of break failure.Kisii Governor James Ongwae sent condolences to the bereaved families and those admitted in hospital.

“My Government will ensure that those hospitalized receive proper medical attention adding that they will sit with the bereaved families to see how they can be helped,” Ongwae said.
