Rutto has openly criticized Deputy President William Ruto on a wide range of issues. He also rubbished the formation of JAP and even went to congratulate the ODM candidate who won the Kajiado Central by election. Ruto is said to have formed a secretariat that will launch his bid come next year.
The DP is seen as the undisputed Rift Valley kingpin and its yet to be seen if Rutto can shake the status quo. Former President Moi son, Gideon Moi, is also eyeing the presidency in 2017.
Rutto is keen on taking over UDM or URP once the DP moves to JAP. The Bomet Governor has held several meetings with the influential Kalenjin Council of Elders and influential leaders from the region.
The governor has however come under sharp criticism from some leaders. Bomet Central MP Ronal Tonui criticized him saying:
“Those are wild dreams and efforts in futility. What we know is the DP will take the mantle in 2022 and in the Rift Valley we shall all combine our efforts with other communities in rallying behind the DP to be the next President”
