Trouble started when Peter Jumwa was rudely interrupted when he was preparing to read the condolence letter by Siaya Town MCA James Otare. The MCA said that the letter would not bring to life the lives of the victims who had been massacred by Al shabaab militants.

Jumwa said that he respected the wishes of the mourners and would present the letter to the family. He was quoted saying:
“I have decided not to read it but I will present it to the family later,”
Chrsitine Anyango, a survivor of the massacre, narrated how the attackers demanded that the President should withdraw the Kenyan troops from Somalia:
“Tell your President to withdraw KDF from Somalia and ensure that North Eastern belongs to Muslims. Garissa must also be part of Somalia and not Kenya,”
