Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko now claims that former Prime Minister Raila Odinga approached him to be his running mate. The flamboyant Sonko reportedly rebuffed Raila advances saying he was firmly behind Uhuru and his Deputy William Ruto.
The Senator has been under siege from Mt. Kenya legislators, led by Starehe MP Maina Kamanda, who feel Sonko is not suitable to be the next Governor of Nairobi. The Senator is seen to be keen on the governor’s seat and is already campaigning through his Sonko Rescue Team that offers free services to residents of Nairobi.
Sonko has endeared himself to the masses and chances of him dislodging the current Governor, Evans Kidero, are very high. Kidero has accused Sonko of running a parallel government. Sonko has been a vocal critic of Kidero and it took the intervention of the President during Labor Day to bring some semblance of peace between the two.
Here is a tweet from Sonko claiming that he had been approached by Raila:
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has asked me to be his running mate in 2017, I am loyal to H.E Uhuru Kenyatta. May be 2022 I’ll think about it
ODM Director of Communication, Phillip Etale, rubbished the claims saying that Raila had asked him to be his mate in the jogging mate.
