Speculations that Raila Odinga daughter, Rosemary Odinga, will join politics have been put to rest as she has been earmarked to run for the Kibra parliamentary seat in 2017. The eloquent Rosemary is said to have planned to join politics in 2022 but pressure from her family members, following the death of her brother Fidel, prompted her to change her mind.
It was widely reported that she was to run for the Nairobi Women Representative seat but her handlers seem to have advised her otherwise. Rosemary will launch her bid for the Kibra parliamentary seat this weekend, a constituency her father enjoyed near fanatical following. Rosemary will also launch a voter and ID registration drive and take the opportunity to taste the political waters before making the official announcement.
Fears are rife that Rosemary may be favored in ODM party primaries at the expense of other candidates. According to well placed sources in ODM, Rosemary will this weekend (Saturday) be crisscrossing Kibra constituency in a caravan to urge residents to register as voters.
She was quoted as saying:
“Next weekend Saturday I will come here in person so that you register as voters and take IDs ready for the next polls…..”
Rosemary has been actively participating in ODM activities following the death of her brother. She was involved in campaigning for Kajiado Central candidate Elijah Memusi, a by-election that was narrowly won by ODM.
Eliud Owalo is also interested in the seat and has asked the ODM Election Board to be impartial and not impose leaders on the residents of Kibra:
“I have publicly impressed upon the ODM Elections Board to provide a level playing field for all aspiring candidates and be professional in their management of party nominations so as to give wananchi the discretion to elect leaders of their choice……”
The seat is currently held by MP Ken Okoth, a close ally of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
