Pull Down Fidel Odinga Road Sign Immediately Or We Will Do It Ourselves, Jubilee Threaten (See Details)
Mombasa politicians affiliated to the ruling party Jubilee party have demanded the immediate removal of a road sign named after Cord leader Raila Odinga’s son.
The New Nyali Road, renamed after the late Fidel Odinga, should instead have been named Professor Ali Mazri, according to Matano Chengo and Mohamed Salim.
Salim said naming the road in honor of Raila’s son who died on January 4, 2015 did not add any value to the people of Coast region.
He was quoted by a section of the media saying of Ali Mazrui:
" He lectured for several years in reputable universities of the world"
"Why haven’t they renamed any road after Mazrui? We also have other prominent individuals like Mekatilili wa Menza who deserve that honour"
"What contribution did Fidel make for Kenya, leave alone Mombasa? We are demanding that sign post be pulled down and the road given another name."
Salim who will be contesting the Mvita parliamentary seat in the next general election added that plans were underway to organize a demo to have the sign post removed.
"We will not allow our roads to be given names of individuals who do not have any relevance to our region. We will organise demonstrations to pull down that sign post," he said.
