President Uhuru Kenyatta failed to meet the rugby 7s team as earlier planned. The team was to be hosted at State House by Uhuru but the plans were cancelled without explanation.
Kenya made history after thrashing Fiji 30-7 becoming the second African team after South Africa to win a World Series leg.
Uhuru took to social media to congratulate the team. His post read:
You have made us proud, our star continues to shine as a powerhouse in sports. A brilliant, confident and powerful effort has earned Team Kenya a richly deserved victory.
Sports CS Wario and Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko had confirmed that the team would meet Uhuru the next day. It was expected that the President would award them for their heroics.
Sonko went on to promise the lads that he will ‘gift’ each player with a sum of sh100,000. Kenya Airways awarded each player $1,000.
It is widely believed that the President may have cancelled the visit by the Rugby Sevens after word went round that they had dedicated the victory to his sworn political nemesis Raila Odinga.
