DP William Ruto and diminutive journalist Joshua Sang are free at last. The duo faced crimes against humanity in the 2007/8 post-election violence that resulted in the death of over 1,200 people.
Chief Registrar Helena Vukasinovic admitted that the Trial Chamber judges could not find any incrementing evidence that would sustain the case against the duo.
According to Judge Eboe Esuji, the proceeding was declared a mistrial due to political meddling and witness interference.
He said in a statement:
“The charges are hereby vacated and the accused are discharged from the process without prejudice to their presumption of innocence or the prosecutors right to re-prosecute at a later time.”
The news was received with joy from the URP wing of Jubilee. Ruto was in the company of Duale and Murkommen when the news broke.
