We Dedicate This Win To Raila Odinga, Kenya 7s Rugby Team Declare

The Kenya rugby team made history as the second African team after South Africa to win a World Series leg.

This is after the Kenyan lads demolished the much fancied Fiji 30-7 in the Singapore Rugby Sevens.

President Uhuru Kenyatta was among the first Kenyan to congratulate the team via twitter:

"Join me in congratulating the Kenya Sevens Rugby Team on their remarkable win."

Cabinet Secretaries and politicians-with little or no knowledge of the game-took cue from the President and lavished the boys with praises on social media.

On their return to Kenya, the team received a red carpet welcome organized by the Sports ministry. Sonko provided Limos that ferried the players to Ole Sereni where pledges after pledges were made.

Their sponsors, Kenya Airways, promised the players $1,000 each while Sonko said he will dish out Sh100,000 per player. The players are expected to meet the President at State House today-with more goodies expected to be dished out.

Coach Ayimba, who has been facing tough resistance from a section of Rugby Union top officials, said that politicians are the biggest impediment to the game.

Speaking on Citizen TV, the coach castigated the Jubilee administration of making promises that they cannot fulfill.

He went on to praise Cord leader Raila Odinga for playing a critical role in inspiring the lads to achieve what was seen as impossibility.

“I dedicate this victory to all the guys who started this long journey. They deserve it more than anyone else,” said Amonde in reference to the exciting Watembezi Pacesetters of the 1980s and 1990s and the formative Kenya teams that started out in the inaugural World Series in 1999.
