We Will Lock Out Raila, Weta and Kalonzo From Next Election, IEBC Chief Threatens
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chief Issack Hassan has threatened to lock out Raila, Wetangula and Kalonzo if they don’t stop intimidating them.
An agitated Hassan said that it was upon the Cord leaders and their lieutenants to act with a modicum of decorum or be left out of the next general elections.
Cord leaders have called for the immediate removal of IEBC commissioners from office for allegedly sleeping with ‘Jubilee’.
Raila accused the electoral body of being an arm of Jubilee and that the opposition will not participate in the forthcoming elections if the commissioners are not shown the door.
Hassan told the Standard:
“We will bar them from participating in the election if they persist on intimidating the commission against the law. You can quote me on that. We will bar them”
Cord called for countrywide protests every Monday to force.
Hassan has said they will only vacate office “If they (read Cord) outsmart us within the confines of the law, we will honourably walk out with our heads high”
Former commissioner of the defunct Electoral Commission of Kenya (ECK) said it was naïve for Hassan to downplay the political machinations of Raila Odinga.
Alfred Ndambiri said Raila managed to paint the ECK as an evil body that had overseen the rigging in power of former President Mwai Kibaki.
He was quoted as saying:
“We went through all this in 2008 when the political class, just like in the current scenario, based its campaign against us on allegation of rigging or misconducting the previous election. To the extent that it is a mass action approach to it, it is difficult for any commission no matter how strong, how independent and how competent, to survive”
