Senior Counsel James Orengo is arguably one of the best legal minds around. His mettle was tested when the National Super Alliance (NASA) filed a petition at the Supreme Court challenging President Uhuru Kenyatta victory. Raila Odinga, the petitioner, was represented by James Orengo (lead lawyer), Otiende Amolo, Peter Kaluma, Jackson Awele, Anthony Oluoch, Amos Wako and Paul Mwangi. Orengo and his team put a spirited legal argument against the IEBC and Uhuru Kenyatta well paid lawyers. 4-2 judges ruled in favor of the petitioner and Uhuru Kenyatta’s win was annulled.
This was a first in Africa.
We take a look at the Jubilee lawyers who wobble when they hear the name Orengo.
Kipchumba Murkomen-Elgeyo Marakwet Senator
The Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkonen did not tire to make snide remarks during the presidential petition directed at Senator James Orengo. His favored platform was twitter and he gleefully mocked the petitioner’s lawyers line of argument. He chided Orengo for a bombshell that he claimed never was. He was hard hit when the six bench judges ruled in favor of Raila Odinga.
Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi
Representing President Uhuru Kenyatta, senior counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi was humbled and reduced to a social media critic of the Supreme Court after his client lost the petition. He had summarily dismissed the petition as weak. His tweet read in full:
From my readings of the petition filed by Hon Raila,I can sincerely say that his 2013 petition is 1000 times better conceptualized, stronger
Kithure Kindiki- Tharaka Nithi senator
Prof Kithure Kindiki was an ever present face at the Supreme Court during the marathon presidential petition. He, like his Elgeyo Marakwet Counterpart, dismissed Orengo’s assertion that they would unleash a bombshell. According to Orengo, the Senator was among the Jubilee leaders who had misled Uhuru to think he had a watertight case.
Prof PLO Lumumba
He mesmerized the judges and Kenyans who were following the court proceeding with his mastery of the English that amounted to nothing much. PLO was representing IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati.
