Leaders drawn from Nyeri County have been holding night meetings in Nyeri and Nairobi to push for the resignation of Nyeri Deputy Governor Mutahi Kahiga to pave way for a fresh gubernatorial election.
This political scheming comes barely a week after the grisly road accident that claimed the life of Nyeri Governor Dr Wahome Gakuru. The leaders are piling pressure on the deputy Governor to resign and participate in a fresh election where he will be a candidate.
The push from the county leaders has come under sharp criticism as it’s unconstitutional and raises speculation that the Governor may have been murdered to pave way for a preferred candidate. The law is clear that incase the governor dies in office his deputy assumes the position.
Former Kakamega Governor said of the political machinations in Nyeri: ‘He must resist, what they are asking him to do is completely unconstitutional. Infact, that fuels the theory that the late governor might have been murdered to pave way for some shadowy character!’
Mr Kahiga is facing an acid taste given the powerful figures in Jubilee who want him to step aside. The deputy Governor issued a statement on Friday assuring his supporters that he will be sworn in on Monday morning.
“We are going to have a cleansing ceremony carried out by the clergy at the county government offices on Monday morning and then I am going to be sworn into office in the afternoon,” the deputy Governor Mutahi Kahiga assured his supporters.
